Briza Publications author Nigel Gericke studied botany and zoology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, graduating with B.Sc Honours in plant ecology 1978 and then went on to study medicine at the same university, graduating as a medical doctor in 1984. He has a strong interest Primary Health Care, and has practised medicine in the public health sector in rural, township, and academic settings in South Africa, and also as a district medical officer in Labrador, Canada.
From 1995-2000 he was an advisory panellist to the United States Pharmacopoeia’s Nutrition and Electrolytes Expert Advisory Panel. He has been documenting and photographing indigenous medicinal plant usage in southern Africa for the last twenty years, with a view to contributing to the conservation of this body of local knowledge. To date he has co-authored two books on indigenous South African medicinal and edible plant use, Medicinal Plants of South Africa, and Peoples Plants.
In 1998, together with colleagues, he founded a natural medicines enterprise called Phyto Nova to develop and distribute novel manufactured natural medicines from cultivated indigenous South African medicinal plants. He presently works as an independent scientific and medical consultant at the interface of medicinal plant innovation, Primary Health Care, and rural development. He is a member of the IUCN/WWF Medicinal Plants Specialist Group, and photographic editor for the journal Pharmaceutical Biology.
