Aloes form a conspicuous part of South Africa’s landscape. These exquisite plants are easily distinguishable as their succulent leaves are arranged in rosettes and the have tall, candlelike inflorescences (cluster of flowers on a branch or system of branches). However, the vary in lengths and can either grow just a few centimeters or up to 20 meters tall.

Aloes are well known in the medicinal and cosmetic industries. Their medicinal properties lies in their juice and is used in local, traditional medicines. The juice or powder derivative is used to treat stomach complaints and improve digestion by acting as a laxative and stimulating the gastric juices. Moreover, aloe juice is also used to treat burn wounds, especially in gel form. Nothing soothes a sunburnt skin like an ointment containing Aloe gel! Moreover, aloe is also a popular ingredient in lotions, soaps and hair and skin products, created from aloe gel, due to their medicinal properties.

Aloes is also widely used for landscaping purposes, featuring in many South African gardens and providing the extra boldness and fieriness for gardens.
