Briza Publications author Neels Esterhuyse was born in Namibia, in the small town of Okahandja in 1935. He spent his youth on the farm Eureka in the Outjo district and attended Outjo primary school. He matriculated at Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenbosch, and obtained a BSc (Forestry) degree at Stellenbosch University. In later years he obtained a BHons Inst. Agrar degree at the University of Pretoria.
Neels had a long association with the Department of Forestry and retired as Director: Forestry Planning, in the year 2000. After retiring his hobby is seed collecting and he supplies seed of trees and shrubs to many nurseries in South Africa and abroad. Neels is the author of some 25 pamphlets of the Department of Forestry on trees and tree planting.
His most important publication, together with Jutta von Breitenbach and Hermien Sohnge, is Remarkable Trees of South Africa, published in 2001. This book serves the valuable purpose of bringing the plight of our champion trees to the attention of the Authorities and the public. Since publication of this book, the Department of Water affairs and Forestry embarked on a program of identifying champion trees with the purpose of preserving them.
Neels Esterhuyse is a forestry scientist who has had a long association with the Department of Forestry and Water Affairs. His in-depth knowledge of trees and passion for their preservation has resulted in the writing of this book.
