Books for Nature Lovers

Briza Publications celebrated 25 years of business on 17 April 2015. Authors, suppliers, contributors, friends and personnel joined in the festivities at the Milk Plum Restaurant, in the Pretoria National Botanical Garden.

Eben van Wyk, founder member of Briza, took the guests on an interesting journey by sharing some highlights over the years. The ‘adventure’ as Eben called it, started with an idea to compile a book on grasses of South Africa. GIDS TOT GRASSE VAN SUID-AFRIKA was the first publication of Briza. It was translated in English and both editions were revised at later stages. Almost 60 000 copies of GUIDE TO GRASSES OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (English and Afrikaans editions) sold to date.

Currently Briza Publications is also the most successful natural history publisher regarding co-productions. This stems from attending the Frankfurt Book Fair for 16 years. MEDICINAL PLANTS OF THE WORLD was the first co-production and it set the stage for several other international titles over time.

At the celebration event Jacqui January from RSG Radio entertained the guests by interviewing three selected authors: Frits van Oudtshoorn (author of the first Grasses book), Ben-Erik van Wyk (author of 17 local and several international titles) and JJ van Rensburg (author of the latest ‘best seller’). The professional manner in which Jacqui conducted the ‘live’ interviews and the interesting stories related by the authors, made this a very entertaining and enjoyable event.

The special atmosphere of the venue, the tasty food and the cheerful guests, contributed to the success of this occasion – an event that will be remembered for years to come.

Briza received congratulatory messages from authors and suppliers that could not attend. For these best wishes and messages, click here (and from Margaret Roberts)
