Our history...
Briza Publications is a small, independent publishing house based in Gauteng. It was started in 1990 with the sole purpose of publishing an identification guide to grasses of South Africa. Now in its second edition, the Guide to Grasses of Southern Africa is still a perennial bestseller! From these humble beginnings Briza has grown into the leading publisher of botanical books in South Africa.
At present, its published list comprises more than 100 titles, and includes definitive identification guides on medicinal plants, food plants, poisonous plants, indigenous trees, indigenous garden plants, problem plants, wildflowers and plants groups such as the aloes, acacias and mesembs. Briza also publishes books on gardening, ecology, tourism and natural history, including books on mammals, reptiles and birds.
Marula Books has been an imprint of Briza Publications since 2005. Books of a more general or popular nature, such as the recent best-sellers Muthi & Myths of the African Bush, by Heather Dugmore and Ben-Erik van Wyk, and Natuur-lik!, by Erik Holm, are published under this imprint.
Briza Academic Books is a new imprint of Briza Publications. It was established in 2007 as a vehicle to publish scientific material which would normally not be commercially viable but which would contribute significantly to the body of published work in the field of Natural Sciences. This is realised through generous contributions and sponsorships. The high standard of the content coupled with the fine reputation of Briza Publications driving this initiative is proving to be a winning combination, as showcased by the recent publication of Bacterial Diseases of Plants in South Africa. Dictionary of names for southern African trees is a flagship title under this imprint and we will feature a subscription invitation shortly.
In recent years Briza has also taken the international market by storm, with two of its flagship titles, Medicinal Plants of the World and Food Plants of the World being co-published in Germany, the United States and China and exclusive distribution rights taken up by major publishers in England and Australia. Further titles in this exciting series are in the pipeline for 2006 and 2007. As a result of these international partnerships, Briza has also been in a favourable position to secure South African publishing and distribution rights for leading international botanical and reference books.
